Responding to the increasing demand for quality education, a group of forward-thinking citizens petitioned the Oregon School District to establish a school in the community.

The Oregon School District approved the request, and in 1891, Riverdale Grade School opened its doors to its first batch of students. Situated near the Willamette River, the school's name, "Riverdale," pays homage to the beautiful river that flows through Portland and the Willamette Valley.

In its early years, the school faced challenges typical of most fledgling institutions. Limited funding, small class sizes, and modest facilities were some of the obstacles the school had to overcome.
